New and experienced Interior employees can search for answers to some of their ethics questions at Interior’s Ethics Web site. At http://www.doi.gov/ethics/index.html, employees will find a welcome letter from Designated Ethics Official Melinda Loftin, answers to frequently asked questions, resources, contact informaton, online training and more. Employees can also read Secretary Kempthorne’s message to new employees.

In his letter, Kempthorne encourages employees to become familiar with ethics laws and regulations. He also stresses the importance of contacting departmental ethics officials early on and erring on the side of caution:

“At the Department of the Interior, as passionate as we are about our endeavor to protect and provide access to out Nation's natural and cultural heritage, we emphasize an ethics culture that is beyond reproach. In making decisions, we don't stop at ‘Can I do it’ ... we look to ‘Should I do it?’ There is a simple guiding principle to think about in following ethical decision making: ‘If in doubt … don't.’”
