The Bureau of Land Management’s Salt Lake City Field Office accomplished their Bullhog Chip prescribed burn mission on Saturday, May 31, 2008, in southern Skull Valley. They met their objectives and exceeded beyond mission expectations thanks to the help from fellow firefighters from the Unified Fire Authority Wildland firecrews in Salt Lake County.  By the end of the day, firecrews had burned a total of 145 acres. The Salt Lake Field Office Fuels program will study the far-reaching long term effects of the burn, including fire intensity and its affect on soil moisture and groundcover recovery.

“The UFA crew was a key asset to our ability to complete the project in a single day,” said Brook Chadwick, fuels program manager for the Salt Lake Field Office, BLM. “The success we saw on Saturday can be measured in cost savings, future fire research and preseason training time for firecrews.”

BLM plans no more prescribed fires in southern Skull Valley until fall. For more information on the Bullhog Burn or other prescribed fires in Utah, please visit www.utahfireinfo.gov or call Erin Darboven, BLM, at (801) 977-4328.
