In 2005, the Department of the Interior Office of Civil Rights began organizing Diversity Days events celebrated across the Bureaus. Each year, the OCR has chosen to recognize a Bureau that has excelled in supporting special emphasis and diversity programs and initiatives.
- Serving as lead bureau on the memorandum of understanding between Interior and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities to expand efforts to promote educational and career opportunities for Hispanic students;
- Serving as lead bureau for Interior's participation in the Society of American Indian Government Employees Pre-Conference Session held in June; and
- Significant contributions by the Lower Colorado Region in
organizing and managing the DOI Diversity Days event.
Federal laws, presidential executive orders and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission regulations mandate special emphasis programs to ensure that equal treatment of all employees exists in the federal sector. The activities CREO led highlight the department's determination to become a model employer; to facilitate observances designed to foster increased awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the contributions of all persons; and to support inclusiveness and full participation in the workplace.
