Celebrate Independence in America’s National Parks
WASHINGTON – What better way to celebrate Independence Day this year than by visiting a national park? The National Park Service has the honor of preserving numerous areas that commemorate the birth of the United States and American independence. The ideals and freedoms our country won during the American Revolution and guaranteed in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are celebrated throughout the National Park System.

June 9 Message from Interior Secretary to DOI Employees
Earlier this week, President Obama announced the launch of “United We Serve,” a call to service for all Americans designed to address the Nation’s growing needs as a result of the economic downturn. It will empower ordinary people to take an active role in their communities and in their futures. In announcing United We Serve, the President outlined its purpose to promote health care, support education and improve literacy, provide community renewal, and advance clean energy and public lands restoration.

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Holds ‘Sense of Wonder’ Preschool Camp
Rachel Carson once said “If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder … he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.” These words served as the inspiration for the second annual "Sense of Wonder" summer camp for children ages three and four and their parents at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

National Park Service Diversity Recruiting Efforts Achieving Success
The efforts of the National Park Service’s Recruitment Futures Implementation Team have begun showing significant results in the area of diversity recruitment.
The team developed an annual Service recruitment event that brings up to 40 students each year from as many as 20 diversity-serving institutions and organizations to a national park area. The four-day event provides students with an opportunity to learn about the national parks, the national park idea and potential career paths with the Service.

Interior Department’s Small Business Office Reaches Out to Small Businesses in Northwest
The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization recently hosted an event for more than 200 small businesses in Portland, Ore. The event, which took place May 13, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., was OSDBU’s second in a series of outreach to vendors interested in doing business with DOI. Small business from Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Utah and the Dakotas attended the house-filled sessions.
