On June 14 Lake Mead National Recreation Area partnered with the Nevada Department of Wildlife to help celebrate  the state of Nevada's Free Fishing Day.  More than 200 families spent the day with Lake Mead rangers and state Wildlife wardens, enjoying the outdoors and learning how to fish. Participants spent the morning learning about fish identification and proper bait choices before experiencing the joy of fishing.

Staff members made loaner rods and reels available, as they and volunteers roamed the shoreline, helping the young anglers. Other partners included the Bureau of Reclamation and the University of Nevada Las Vegas -  Public Lands Institute who were on hand ensuring all anglers had a fun and educational experience. Partners also  helped support the activities by providing sun shades, casting lessons, a fish-art booth, water-safety activities and information on desert plants and animals.  Forever Resorts Inc. also hosted a variety of family activities and a free barbecue lunch at Callville Bay Marina to promote  the first National Get Outdoors Day.  The day was perhaps best summarized by a young teenager who had never fished before, "This is awesome," he said.
