Gerry Gaumer has been selected as the new
deputy chief of communications and public affairs for the National Park
Service. He will begin his new position on August 19 and will assist
with the overall management of the NPS public information program. His
responsibilities will include creating, planning, and implementing the
division’s programs, as well as administering the office’s staffing and
budget. Gerry has worked as an NPS public affairs specialist
since 1999. Prior to coming to this office, he was the site manager of
the National Mall in Washington, D.C. During his 25-year career, he
has served in a variety of management, supervisory, law enforcement,
interpretation, and administration positions at the following sites:
National Capital Parks-Central, Natchez NHP, Roosevelt-Vanderbilt NHS,
Appomattox Court House NHP, Independence NHP, and Gettysburg NMP. He
is by education a historian, having received a bachelor’s degree in
history at the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1978 and a
master’s degree in U.S. history from Pennsylvania State University in
1980. Prior to joining the NPS, he taught U.S. history at the Shattuck
School in Minnesota.
